BIO

Stevie Dix (b.1990)  is a Belgian artist currently living and working in Genk, Belgium. Her oils on canvas are heavy and thick, composed in a personal language where figures and symbols are metaphors for intimate feelings and, at times, political perspectives. Having spent most of her adult life living in the UK, her work often looks back to a period of late adolescence spent in Belgium. She did not complete any formal art education, but growing up in a household of artists, she doesn’t identify with the term ‘self-taught’. Feeling ‘stuck’ in a small, forgotten, ex-industrial town known outside of Belgium mainly for football, she spent a lot of her days in her mother’s studio learning to sew costumes and to draw and paint. By translating introspection into a coming-of-age theme, she aims to hit a universal nerve. As main influences she cites the Belgian Surrealists, the Chicago Imagists, American animator Suzan Pitt and German-Jewish artist Charlotte Salomon.

She participated in the Turps Banana Correspondence Course 2016/2017, tutored by artist Phil King, and she has been recently in residency at superzoom, in the South of France. Recent solo exhibitions include ‘Belgian Techno’, Never Gallery (Gothenburg, Sweden); ‘The nearer the ground, the louder it sounds’, Galerie Chloe Salgado (Paris, France), both in 2020; ‘The Devil’s in the Details’, L21 Gallery (Palma, Spain) and ‘Désert’, NEVVEN Gallery (Gothenburg, Sweden) in 2018.

Her work has also been included in group exhibitions at Castor Projects (London, 2020), Steve Turner Gallery (Los Angeles, 2019), The Horse Hospital (London, 2019), Plus One Gallery (Antwerp, 2018 and 2017), and Hannah Barry Gallery (London, 2017).
