Fanny Brodar (b. Oslo, Norway, 1971) is an artist based in Maine (US). Brodar’s love of story writing and creating cartoonish figures started when she was a child. She later studied illustration at the Art Institute of Boston, and discovered a passion for comic and pop art as well as creating her own handwritten typeface, things that she incorporates in her works today.

The artist’s paintings lure the viewer into entering this pictured domain – an otherworldly and magical place, like her childhood bedroom that became whatever she wanted simply by thinking it up. She builds on the nostalgic associations of the audience, presenting monsters that resemble familiar characters from childhood, favourite films, and fashion. Recent exhibitions have taken place at Guy Hepner, NYC; NY; Caelis Galeria, Shanghai, China;  YKP, Seoul, Korea; and L21 LAB, Palma.

“Tropical Cappuccino” is the result of Brodar’s recent participation in L21 Residency Programme in March 2023. When asked about her creative expectations for this residency, the artist mentioned her desire to take risks and try new techniques. Having the opportunity to remove herself from her daily life and step outside of her comfort zone allowed her to discover new surroundings and explore sources of inspiration in Palma.

During her stay in the island, Brodar immersed herself in new routines: going for a cappuccino to the local Café before painting in the studio, exploring the residency’s neighbourhood, taking a stroll in the city’s warm springtime, visiting the fine arts shop and trying out new materials and techniques.

Since her time in the residency, her focus has been on producing works using oil pastels on raw canvas, allowing the composition to have a more minimalistic and unfinished quality. She aims to remove the clutter from her previous work, revealing the raw and authentic qualities that make her art stand out.

“Tropical Cappuccino” is on view from L21 Residency window at Arxiduc Lluís Salvador, 100, Palma until 02.05.2023.
