– GAO HANG

Gao Hang (nacido en 1991, en Baoding, China) actualmente vive en Houston, TX. Gao se trasladó a Houston en 2015, para realizar un MFA en Pintura por la Universidad de Houston, después de obtener una licenciatura en Pintura al Óleo en la Universidad Normal de Capital en Beijing, China, 2013.

Las pinturas recientes de Hang se centran en trabajar con la “definición” de la imagen en los gráficos digitales, especialmente los producidos en los últimos 20 años. Hang evoca el movimiento neo-pop posmodernista, utilizando el tema y el color como armadura conceptual y estructural. Deliberadamente, Hang utiliza tonos fluorescentes que considera los tonos de su generación. Entendiéndolos como “objetos encontrados” del siglo XXI, a Hang le interesan los objetos que se bañan en la grandeza de la tecnología moderna, al tiempo que exponen cierta crudeza, rareza o torpeza por haberse quedado obsoletos. En palabras del artista: «Mi proceso artístico tiene que ver con mis hábitos y obsesiones. La mayoría de las veces escucho comedia mientras hago mi trabajo. Me gusta la comedia de stand-up que desafía las creencias generales y la corrección política, pero que en el fondo negocia entre las observaciones, el lenguaje y la risa de una determinada actuación. Entonces te das cuenta de que no es una paradoja, sino una buena conversación entre el intérprete y el público. En cierta manera, mis cuadros son como la comedia de stand-up, no pueden hacer mucho para resolver problemas reales. Pero la honestidad brutal, el absurdo y el humor son cualidades muy poderosas en cualquier tipo de conversación».

Su obra ha sido expuesta en numerosas e importantes salas de arte de China, Estados Unidos, España, Alemania, Corea, Países Bajos e Inglaterra. Recientemente ha sido galardonado con el premio Artadia Houston Fellowship Award, en Brooklyn, Nueva York, y con la Houston Art Alliance – Artists and Creative Individuals Grant, en Houston, Texas
